Oppo R17 officially revealed: This is how to do a notch

Oppo R17 flagship phone in pink and blue. Oppo Oppo has unveiled the Oppo R17, the first smartphone to come with Gorilla Glass 6 and a Snapdragon 670 chip. The handset, which appeared on Oppo’s Chinese portal earlier today (via Gadgets360), also sports a novel take on the display notch, as well as an in-display fingerprint sensor. The Oppo R17 comes in two-tone pink and blue color schemes with one memory configuration: 8GB RAM with 128 GB ROM. The display sits at 6.4 inches, featuring a Full-HD+ (1080 x 2280 pixels) resolution and 91.5 percent aspect ratio. It’s flush with the recently revealed Gorilla Glass 6 protection, said to be as scratch resistant as Gorilla Glass 5, but able to withstand more drops and from greater heights than any previous version. Oppo Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 670 chip, meanwhile, is based on a 10nm process and houses eight Kryo 360 cores, Adreno 615 graphics, and a Snapdragon X12 LTE modem. The successor to the Snapdragon 660, this is expected to power a number of mid-range handsets in the future, and comes with AI capabilities similar to those found in Qualcomm’s flagship chip, the Snapdragon 845. As for photography, you’ve got a 16MP + 5MP dual rear camera setup with LED flash and a 25MP camera on the front with f/2.0 aperture. Oppo has lately been pitching itself as the brand to go to if you want top-shelf selfies and you can expect the typical rabble of AI camera features to accompany the R17’s camera too. Editor's PickOppo Find X review: Finding space When we've talked about full-screen phones in 2018, that's meant around an 80 percent screen-to-body ratio with a small bottom bezel and a notch housing the front camera. The front-facing camera is an integral part … Rounding out the core specs is a 3,500mAh battery with USB Type-C connectivity and Oppo’s VOOC charging tech (said to offer two hours of talk time in a five-minute charge). You’ll also find a 3.5mm headphone port, while the handset runs on ColorOS 5.2 (based on Android Oreo). The Oppo R17 release date is set at August 18 and reservations are now open, but Oppo hasn’t announced official price or availability details yet. Oppo R17 flagship phone in pink and blue. Oppo Oppo perhaps doesn’t get the attention it deserves over here in the West but this simply looks like a quality smartphone. It’s eye-catching, the colors are bold, and the notch (the same style as seen on the Oppo F9 Pro last week) is subtle. Add to this its brand new chip, its fast charging, and the tough display and I think it would be a great loss for global Android fans if this stayed in China (and I don’t say that about many phones these days). I understand there are a lot of notch-haters out there, but where do you stand on the Oppo R17 approach? For it or against it? Let me know what you think, I’ll stick around in the comments.
