Welcome to the 255th edition of Android Apps Weekly! Here are the big headlines from the last week:
PUBG Mobile has an interesting update coming out. It’s a cross promotional event with Mission: Impossible — Fallout. The update includes new background music, customizable parachutes, in-game rewards, and some new challenges. The event runs through August. After that, all of this new stuff goes away. It’s a decidedly normal thing for freemium games to have events like this. This one actually sounds a little interesting, though.
YouTube was busy this last week. YouTube Music announced an update schedule. It should be every two weeks. The next update should include SD card support. We’ll let you know what the next one includes, if it includes anything. Additionally, the desktop YouTube site got a minor update. It now shows vertical videos and videos in aspect ratios other than 16:9. We still think shooting vertical videos is a terrible idea. However, they won’t look as bad on desktop as they used to.
Microsoft is trying to bridge the gap between Windows and Android. The new app is Your Phone. It doesn’t do a whole lot yet. The Windows app shows you photos taken on your Android device. It doesn’t sync to the cloud or anything like that. It just shows your computer the photos taken with your phone. The app could be a super simple way to transfer them to your PC. There are plenty of ways to do it, but this one could actually be really good. It’s only available to those with the Windows Insider program right now. We’ll let you know more later.
Fortnite is not coming to Google Play, apparently. The CEO of Epic Games confirmed as much earlier this week. Epic Games intends to launch the game to its own website and only its own website. Users need to download it there and install. There are security risks to this. However, Epic Games gets to skirt Google’s 30% free that they charge developers on all purchases. This is a bold move and we won’t know what happens with it until it happens.
Reddit confirmed a cyber-attack from back in June. The attackers gained access to some of Reddit’s backup data. That includes data from as late as 2007. The information lost included email addresses, salted hashed passwords, and private messages. Those who joined after 2007 are fine. That’s good news, at least. Reddit reset the passwords of everyone affected already. Thus, it seems that most of the damage is under control.
