Xiaomi to announce Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus with 18:9 displays on December 7

Xiaomi has announced via its Weibo account that the Redmi 5 and 5 Plus smartphones will make their debut on December 7 in China. Although the company didn’t share any specific information about the devices, we already know a lot about the Redmi 5. The smartphone has recently stopped by TENAA and was also briefly listed on China Telecom’s website, giving us a closer look at its specs and design — see image above. The two listings revealed that the handset will sport a 5.7-inch display with HD+ resolution (1440 x 720 pixels) and the popular 18:9 aspect ratio we’ve seen on many devices this year. It will be powered by the Snapdragon 450 chipset and come in three storage configurations: 2 GB RAM/16 GB storage, 3 GB RAM/32 GB storage, and 4 GB RAM/64 GB storage. Further, the device will include a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, Android 7.1.2 Nougat, and expandable storage (up to 128 GB). It’s expected to be released on December 10 in China, and will likely make its way to India and other Asian markets shortly after. Unfortunately, we don’t know much about the Redmi 5 Plus at this point. Rumors suggest the smartphone could feature the Snapdragon 625 chipset under the hood and pack a larger 4,000 mAh battery. We also expect it to come with an 18:9 display as well as a similar design. We’ll have to wait for the official reveal to learn more. The Redmi series has been extremely popular in India so far and has helped the company match Samsung’s market share in the third quarter. If the two upcoming devices will be as popular or even more as the Redmi 4 and Redmi Note 4, Xiaomi might soon become the biggest smartphone maker in the country.
