OnePlus 6T: All the rumors in one place

OnePlus logo - OnePlus 6T specs, release date, news, rumors, leaks In this post, which will be updated regularly, we take a closer look at the latest rumors surrounding OnePlus’ upcoming OnePlus 6T smartphone. The times are a-changin’ in the smartphone world. The premium bracket is slowly edging beyond the $1,000 mark and you can now grab budget phones with flagship specs for less than $400. Once the plucky upstart, OnePlus is now a globally-known brand and a legion of fans with high expectations. Its latest phone, the OnePlus 6, lived up to the company’s “Never Settle” mantra, delivering a top-tier experience in almost every area for a reasonable price. But with Xiaomi’s Pocophone F1 and other ‘flagship killers’ vying for OnePlus’ throne, the OnePlus 6T has plenty to prove. Here’s everything we know about OnePlus’ latest T-series phone so far. OnePlus 6T: Release date An image of the OnePlus 6 held out in a person's left hand with the screen on. The nitty-gritty The OnePlus 6T may launch on October 17. It will be the first OnePlus phone to launch on a U.S. carrier. While OnePlus very quietly suggested that it wouldn’t release a second flagship in 2018 — citing the lack of potential hardware upgrades — it’s now all-but-certain a third mid-cycle phone (following the OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 5T) will debut in Q4. We can safely assume the phone will be called the OnePlus 6T, but the release date is still something of a mystery. For the OnePlus 5T, substantial rumors didn’t start circulating until a month before its eventual launch on November 16, 2017. The ball has started rolling a little earlier for the OnePlus 6T, however, which could indicate a slightly earlier release date. More: Updated OnePlus Bullets Wireless on the way There’s also the fact that the OnePlus 6 broke cover in May, one month earlier than the main numbered line has historically been unveiled. As such, all signs at this stage point to an October release. An October launch was also potentially hinted at in an official teaser for the phone. The fairly innocuous image of the phone’s ambient display (or always-on display) was meant to promote the new in-display fingerprint sensor. However, a few eagle-eyed writers here at Android Authority spotted that the date shown in the image — October 17 — could possibly be teasing the final launch date. OnePlus 6T homescreen launch date fingerprint sensor CNET/OnePlus Whenever the phone does arrive, it will make history as the first OnePlus phone to launch in brick and mortar stores in the U.S. thanks to a partnership with T-Mobile. OnePlus will reportedly sell both the global variant of the OnePlus 6T in T-Mobile stores and a T-Mobile-specific model that will be optimized for the carrier’s network which includes support for 600mHz bands, otherwise known as band 71. OnePlus 6T: Specs and features OnePlus 6 black The nitty-gritty OnePlus has confirmed the phone will feature an in-display fingerprint sensor. It’ll still be an absolute powerhouse. When it comes to new numbered releases, OnePlus tends to slowly trickle out new features in the run up to launch. Things are usually slightly different with T-series devices, so we don’t expect to hear much from the Chinese firm until its official unveiling. That being said, OnePlus apparently couldn’t help itself when it sent an email to one publication confirming that its next flagship will feature an in-display fingerprint sensor which uses an optical image sensor and AI processor to scan your prints. Editor's PickHow fingerprint scanners work: optical, capacitive, and ultrasonic variants explainedFingerprint scanners aren’t just reserved for the very top-tier of smartphones these days, with even many budget phones packing the tech these days. Technology has moved on a lot from the early days too, becoming … OnePlus has experimented with different fingerprint sensor shapes, sizes, and positions, but we now know for a fact that the OnePlus 6T will move the sensor under the screen, much like the Vivo Nex. Despite the new headline feature, OnePlus has confirmed that Face Unlock — which was first introduced with the OnePlus 5T — will also be available as a security option. Dash Charge remains one of the most beloved features on any modern OnePlus phone and it’s expected to make a return with the OnePlus 6T, but perhaps under a different name. OnePlus lost an application to use the Dash trademark in Europe after being opposed by Amazon and Bragi and has since filed an application for “Warp Charge.” A new phone release would be as good a time as any to introduce the new branding. Each new OnePlus release has always been outfitted with the latest silicon from Qualcomm and there’s no reason to expect the OnePlus 6T will be any different. Much like the OnePlus 6, the OnePlus 6T should be powered by the Snapdragon 845 SoC backed by 6GB/8GB RAM. More: OnePlus 6T: Five things I want to see Software-wise, the OnePlus 6T could run a version of OxygenOS based on Android 9.0 Pie out of the box, but you shouldn’t hold your breath. A Pie-based OxygenOS build is currently in beta with more than a few quirks and bugs. There’s a 50/50 chance it’ll be ready in time for launch. As for the rest of the specs and features, we’re a little in the dark at the moment. Android Authority’s own Mitja Rutnik dreamt up a whole bunch of wishlist features if OnePlus needs some inspiration, but it’d be best not to get your hopes up about any possible wireless charging support or an IP rating until we hear any credible rumors. Just please keep the headphone jack, OnePlus. Please. OnePlus 6T: Design OnePlus 6 white The nitty-gritty The notch isn’t going anywhere, but it could be much smaller this time. OnePlus says the phone will be slightly thicker and sport more of a unibody look. You can’t deny that the OnePlus 6 was a beautiful phone that gave the series the makeover it had long deserved… as long as you could look past one controversial design choice: the notch. Unfortunately for all you ardent notch-haters out there, the OnePlus 6T is very likely to follow in its predecessor’s footsteps and sport a dreaded notch. Before you start lighting up the comments in a fury, however, you should know that it may not be quite so bad this time around. Oppo F9The Oppo F9 When speculating about the look of any new OnePlus phone, the best place to start is usually the latest from OnePlus’ parent/sister/some-kind-of-unspoken-relation company Oppo. This time around we have both the Oppo R17 and Oppo F9 — two fullscreen phones that both sport what’s become known as a ‘waterdrop’ notch. Further evidence that the OnePlus 6T will feature a smaller notch design came with the alleged leak of the phone’s box lid. The underside of the lid contains an outline of the phone, showing the already confirmed in-display fingerprint scanner and a waterdrop notch. A photo showing a lid, purportedly from OnePlus 6T packaging. Weibo/Laobaotech Away from the notch, OnePlus has confirmed that the shift to an in-display fingerprint sensor has prompted a slight redesign over the existing OnePlus 6. The OnePlus 6T will reportedly be 0.45mm thicker than its predecessor to accommodate the new technology. Likewise, as the rear fingerprint sensor is no longer needed, the phone will have more of a unibody look. OnePlus 6T: Price OnePlus 6 The nitty-gritty Will the price go up again? Probably! Price is always a hot topic when a new OnePlus phone rolls around and that won’t change with the OnePlus 6T. OnePlus has gradually increased the price of its flagship phones every year, taking us from the $299 OnePlus One to the $529 OnePlus 6 in just over four years. Check it out: $299 – OnePlus One $329 – OnePlus 2 $399 – OnePlus 3 $439 – OnePlus 3T $479 – OnePlus 5 $499 – OnePlus 5T $529 – OnePlus 6 While it’d be great if the OnePlus 6T bucked this trend, it seems very unlikely. The bigger question is how much the price will increase by. We’re hoping it isn’t over $549 but even if it is, that’s still going to be a bargain price compared to other equivalent devices from big name OEMs like Samsung, Huawei, LG, Sony, HTC, and the like. These are all the rumors about the OnePlus 6T we have come across so far. We’ll update this page as we hear more. Meanwhile, let us know your thoughts on the possibilities of the next OnePlus phone in the comments!
