It’s no secret that HTC has been struggling for the last few years, as the company continues to be outclassed by the likes of Samsung, LG, and now Google (kinda). While its Virtual Reality division has been keeping things afloat for some time, the smartphone division continues to post losses, and more executives have been resigning.
The latest exec to hand in his resignation is HTC’s President of Smartphone and Connected Devices, Chialin Chang. This move is not all that surprising considering that Google acquired much of HTC’s smartphone design and engineering team just last month. However, what is surprising is the fact that HTC confirmed plans to continue bringing new flagships to the market, despite the acquisition.
Maybe Chang is ready to abandon ship as HTC has been sinking for quite some time now. HTC disclosed that Chang’s reason for resigning was due to his “personal career plan”, which honestly raises more questions than it answers.
Nonetheless, 2018 is going to be an interesting year, as we have already seen LG pivot away from releasing a 2018 flagship, instead offering refined versions of last year’s LG V30. Maybe we could see a similar move from HTC, but I would rather bet the house on HTC selling off the remainder of its smartphone division after the release of the HTC U12.
Speaking of the U12, while the device won’t be launched at MWC 2018, HTC has confirmed the device is in the works, while also confirming a dual-camera setup will be on the way. As for whether we’ll see a refined version of the super-sexy HTC U11 Plus remains to be seen.
