We’re only a few days away from Samsung’s Unpacked event for the Galaxy S9. The upcoming smartphone — which will come in a regular and plus sized models — has been leaked onto the web so many times now, it’s getting hard to keep track. Most of the time this is by way of renders or 3D images obtained by leakers, but now it seems Samsung is responsible for this latest mishap.
According to the folks at XDA — who performed a teardown of Samsung’s Unpacked 2018 app — Samsung is hiding 3D images of the device that could be accessed using the app. For what? Well, it seems Samsung was planning on allowing anyone with the app to get their own virtual hands-on with the phone by way of Augmented Reality, with those at the event scanning a barcode that would pull up the images.
The 3D models not only confirm the validity of recent leaks, but colors (purple, blue, black), the return of the Bixby button, new fingerprint sensor arrangement, and yes, a headphone jack.
Last year, Samsung had press/media strap a Galaxy Gear VR to their heads back when VR was all the rage. With tech companies making a big push into AR, Samsung is simply trying to capitalize on tech’s latest trend.
